Tom Byers is an Associate Professor (Teaching) at Stanford University, where he teaches and conducts research in high-technology entrepreneurship. He is founding director of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP), which serves as the entrepreneurship center for the School of Engineering, and he runs its unique Mayfield Fellows Program. Tom is also academic director of the AEA/Stanford Executive Institute, a prestigious general management program for technology executives. Previously, Tom lectured at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. He has also been academic director of Stanford's Market Strategy for Technology-Based Companies for technology executives. Tom has a broad range of business experience. He was co-founder and president of Slate Corporation (now part of Compaq) and executive vice president of Symantec Corporation. Earlier in his career, he worked at Digital Research (now part of Novell) and Andersen Consulting. Tom serves as a director on the boards of three high-technology companies: Visio Corporation (Nasdaq: VSIO), Netcentives Corporation, and AlphaBlox Corporation. In addition, he serves on advisory boards or committees of Harvard Business School's California Research Center, Garage.com, the Academy of Management's Entrepreneurship Division, the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) for inner-city youth, the Business Association for Stanford Engineering Students (BASES) student group, The Enterprise Network (TEN) incubator of startups, the Software Development Forum (SDF), and the Silicon Valley Association of Software Entrepreneurs (SVASE). He is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education. For his efforts at Stanford, Tom was named 1998's Northern California Entrepreneur of the Year in the "Supporter of Entrepreneurship" category in Ernst & Young's competition.
