Lucile Packard Biodesign Innovation Fellow, 2007-08 Beverly Tang is working to develop original technologies in the area of Anesthesia. Beverly graduated from Stanford University with a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering and a minor in Chemistry. She then completed an internship at IBM Almaden under Stanford's Center on Polymer Interfaces and Macromolecular Assemblies (CPIMA) and worked on building polymers for organic light emitting diodes. Beverly went on to finish her M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, both from Stanford. Her doctoral research focused on using a combined MRI and computational fluid dynamics approach to study the role of blood flow conditions in the initiation, progression, and prevention of diseases such as atherosclerosis and pulmonary arterial hypertension. She was driven to pursue this Biodesign Fellowship opportunity by the combination of her undergraduate pre-med training, graduate experience in the Stanford Cardiovascular Biomechanics Research Laboratory, and long-standing desire to integrate novel technologies to improve patient care. This year, Beverly hopes to gain insight into the medical device industry, experience the entrepreneurial process, and define how to best combine her skills and interests into a career that will impact health care providers and patients.
