Dr. Jackler was raised in Waterville, Maine, attended college and medical school in Boston, and moved west to the University of California, San Francisco for residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. After taking a Neurotology fellowship at the House Ear Clinic, Dr Jackler joined the faculty at UCSF where he was Professor of Otolaryngology and Neurological Surgery until 2003, when he joined Stanford Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery as Professor and Chief of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery. Dr. Jackler's clinical interests lie in tumors of the ear and temporal bone with a special focus upon surgery of the posterior and lateral cranial base. He has contributed a number of widely utilized innovations designed to enhance exposure of inaccessible intracranial tumors located adjacent to the brainstem. Dr Jackler has authored over 130 peer reviewed papers, over 25 textbook chapters, numerous editorials, published three books (Neurotology - 1994 (2'nd edition 2004), Atlas of Neurotology & Skull Base Surgery -1996, Tumors of the Ear and Temporal Bone - 2000), and served as Otology Section Editor for one of the major reference books in the field (Bailey BR. Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 2001). His textbook of Neurotology is considered to be the "bible" of the field. Together with Dr Blevins of the Stanford faculty he co-authored a CD-ROM (Interactive Temporal Bone Dissector) that won the American Publishers Association award for the best hard media in science & mathematics in 1998. Since 1995 he has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the most prestigious journal in the field, Otology & Neurotology . He is also incoming President of the American Neurotology Society. Dr Jackler's wife Laurie is an artist. Together they have 4 teenage children.
