Geoffrey Lin has been a partner in the Shanghai office of Ropes & Gray and part of the Intellectual Property Transactions practice group of the firm, since 2005 when he began practicing in China. He works with global companies to monetize, risk assess, and protect intellectual property central to their businesses. He focuses on structuring technology transfers as well as enforcing clients' intellectual property rights in the life science and high technology industries. Mr. Lin has advised clients in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, health care, technology, electronics and telecommunications industries and has represented clients such as Genentech, Inc., Becton, Dickinson, and Company, and Apple, Inc. He has advised US medical products companies foster, capture and enforce intellectual property generated through acquired Chinese subsidiaries and wholly owned subsidiaries, best intellectual property practices for Research and Development including developing methods and systems to minimize know-how leakage and theft, on freedom to operate analyses and patent enforcement strategies. Mr. Lin is currently helping a US pharmaceutical company structure and develop a joint venture with Chinese biotech to develop, obtain regulatory approval, and commercialize a pre-clinical biologic asset owned by the client, and by drafting the intellectual property licenses integral to the transaction. He has also acted for global biotechnology companies to address generic biologic competitors in China through use of regulatory protections, assessing the strength of the clients' patent portfolio, developing and executing strategies to prove patent infringement including developing and utilizing analytical testing methodologies, defending several patents from invalidation actions, monitoring and applying to invalidate competitors' patents, and strengthening their Chinese patent portfolio.
