10th Anniversary

Biodesign is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year through a series of events.
Starting off with the Roundtable featuring Jeff Shuren (see below), we plan to feature
speakers who will help us look at the industry from a new perspective. Be sure to watch
our website or register for our mailing list to be included in the event announcements.


Roundtable

The second Roundtable of 2010 featured Jeff Shuren, Director of CDRH, and a panel of medtech experts discussing New Directions in U.S. Medical Device Regulation. Over 500 people attended in Arrillaga Hall where we also captured the event on video.

Innovation Fellows

We're happy to announce the addition of a specialty fellow for the 2010-2011 Biodesign Fellows GraduateInnovation fellowship. Congratulations to Ashish Nimgaonkar.

Stanford-India Biodesign (SIB)

Chopra VisitDr. Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer for the U.S. Government, appointed by Barack Obama, visited the SIB Centre at AIIMS in September. Dr. Chopra's visit to India was in advance of Barack Obama's visit in December. No word on whether President Obama will also visit SIB.

Anurag Mairal, Associate Director for the Stanford India Biodesign program, hosted a webinar on Healthcare Crisis: Can Today's MBAs be Part of the Solution? Panelists included individuals from Harvard, Penn, Northwestern, Berkeley, Stanford, and Duke's business schools.

We are pleased to announce the selection of our Stanford-India Biodesign Fellows for 2011: Avijit Bansal, Ayesha Chaudhary, Mridusmita Choudhury, and Chinmay Deodhar. The new fellows will join the program in January, 2011.

We're now in the final planning stages for the 4th Annual Indian Medtech Summit to be held in Delhi, India on December 10-11, 2010. A larger venue has been selected to accommodate the expected 200+ attendees this year.


Singapore-Stanford Biodesign (SSB)

The fellows for 2011 have been selected through a rigorous screening process which included skype and in-person interviews of 20 candidates. Four were selected to join Stanford Biodesign in January, 2011 where they will spend six months learning the Biodesign process. In July, 2011 they will return to Singapore to initiate local needs finding and concept development.Names of our new SSB fellows will be announced in November.

Five of the leadership team in Singapore plan to join us in Delhi at the Stanford-India Biodesign-sponsored Indian Medtech Summit. They will present plans for the SSB program which includes the fellowship, courses through NUS and NTU and other affiliated events.


Global Biodesign

We are currently in discussions with various international programs to determine potential collaborative relationships.

We launched indiabiodesign.org in 2009 to help catalyze a community through social networking. The site now has over 500 members. Please join our community and participate in the global medtech discussion.


Executive Education

CHCF TrainingBiodesign faculty presented for a 2nd year at the Trans-Catheter Theraputics Conference(TCT), the world's largest educational meeting specializing in interventional cardiovascular medicine, on the Biodesign Innovation Process.

Biodesign has partnered with the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) to offer innovation training as part of CHCF's Health Care Leadership Program.


Policy

Josh Makower, Consulting Associate Professor in Biodesign, testified before an Institute of Medicine panel to the challenges of building a successful medical technology company in today's regulatory and political environment.

Awards

Paul Yock is one of four honorees (the others are Tom Fogarty, Julio Palmaz and John Simpson) at the Annual Pulse of the City Gala event, sponsored by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation. "Honoring the achievements of four visionary individuals whose innovative spirit and creative talent have transformed interventional cardiovascular medicine, touching the lives of countless individuals suffering from heart disease and improving patient care around the world."

Two fo the 2008 SIB Fellows, Nish Chasmawala and Amit Sharma, have founded ConSure Medical, which was recently recognized as one of the Top 75 startups in India to bet on by DARE magazine.

The 2009-2010 Fellowship Team of Pedram Afshar, Fletcher Wilson, [pictured left] Partha Ray, and James Yu took first place for the 2-minute elevator pitcher for their Intimal Solutions Project, a minimally invasive way to restore valve competency in patients with venous stasis ulcers due to deep venous reflux. The student team from the Biodesign Innovation class that found a solution to infections due to peritoneal dialysis took first place for the business plan competition. The fellows' team won $1000. The student team of Julia Rasooly, Andy Katz-Mayfield [pictured left], Danielle Weiss, Zaafir Kherani and Will Boenig won $10,000.

Drew Hall, an Electrical Engineering student, and Richard Gaster, a medical and bioengineering student, competed in the BASES business plan competition for their handheld diagnostic device, NanoLab. In a competition with nearly 500 entries, and their device took first prize. The Biodesign faculty have provided mentoring to the team. Earlier this same device won the BME-Idea award and an IEEE prize.

The Low Cost Ventilator has been selected to receive one of Popular Science 2010 Invention Awards. Ten inventions were selected for the honor. Congrats to Matthew Callaghan, 2008-2011 Fellow.SSB and Roula El-Asmar

Stanford Student Biodesign and Biopharma won the Dean of Students Award for Outstanding Achievement. They are pictured accepting the award with Roula El-Asmar [pictured right, center] of Biodesign.

Of the record number of 500 Global Social Venture Competition plans received this year, sixteen teams with plans to produce both revenue and social change competed in the finals at the 11th Annual event. Re:Motion Designs, a Stanford University venture providing high performance, affordable prosthetics for amputees in the developing world, won the $25,000 first prize. The team's JaipurKnee is a polymer-based polycentric knee joint that can be manufactured for less than $20.

Orpheus Medical, a company started by 2008-09 fellows, won the UC Berkeley Business Plan Competition. Orpheus won both the Life Science Track and the Grand Prize, for a total of $25,000. Orpheus has now won all three major Bay Area business plan competitions (the others being Stanford E-Challenge and the Boomer Venture Summit).

iRhythm, a company that was started from technology of the 05-06 Fellows and founded by Uday Kumar, has been awarded the Medical Design Excellence Award for 2010. The awards were announced in the April issue of Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry magazine.

Healhspottr.com has named Paul Yock and Josh Makower to their top 100 Future Health list.


Alumni News

Spiracur, a company started from the Biodesign Innovation class by students Moshe Pinto, Dean Hu, and Kenton Fong, was mentioned in the Reuters Venture Capital Journal in an article entitled "Investors Show Love for Wound Care."

Spiracur, Inc. announced important results from a clinical study highlighting the safety and efficacy of its SNaP Wound Care System for the treatment of chronic lower extremity wounds. The data was presented this week at the Fall 2010 Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC) in Anaheim, Calif.

Christian Eversull (Fellow, 2001-02) has been appointed as Clinical Assistant Professor (Affiliated) of Medicine at Stanford.

St. Jude Medical, Inc. and iRhythm Technologies, Inc. announced they have entered into partnership with a focus on iRhythm's Zio(TM) Patch. iRhythm also announced closure of a $10 million private equity round of financing, which was led by St. Jude Medical and included existing investors Mohr Davidow Ventures and Synergy Life Science Partners. Proceeds will be used to support the commercial launch of the Zio Patch. The announcement was made concurrent with Heart Rhythm 2010, the Heart Rhythm Society's 31st Annual Scientific Sessions, in Denver.

Josh Makower and Aimee AngelJosh Makower recently spent some time in Australia where he was able to catch up with Aimee Angel, 2002-03 fellow (pictured left). Aimee is National Marketing Manager, Australia and New Zealand for Abbott.

Jake (2007-08 fellow) and Ilana Brenner are proud to announce that Nava was born July 16.

Ron Jou (2007-09 fellow) and Angeline announced the birth of their son Everett.

Chris Shen (Executive Director, Singapore-Stanford Biodesign) and Sharon had a baby boy, Alexander, on June 1.

Conor James Wall was born to James (2006-08 fellow) and Jenn Wall.
