AIIMS
delivers top-quality medical care across a broad spectrum of patients
in India, providing treatment to Prime Ministers as well as the poor. Known
for its technological prowess, AIIMS was named the 3rd-ranked hospital
in the World by Newsweek International in 2006. The first cardiac
catheterization in India was performed there, along with many other ‘firsts’:
first centre to use the Palmaz-Schatz stent, first to use IVUS and Doppler
flow wires; first indigenous Platinum-Iridium coil stent; first centre
to perform brachytherapy (Ir192), among others.
Formed by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1956, the objectives of the
institution are
- To develop patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education to demonstrate a high standard of medical education to all medical colleges and other, allied institutions in India
- To bring in one place highest educational facilities for the training of personnel in all fields of health activity
- To attain self-sufficiency in postgraduate medical education
