   Global Biodesign Student Exchange Program

The Global Biodesign Student Exchange Program, through funding via C-IDEA, provides students and fellows from the sciences, engineering, medicine and business the opportunity to work on teams to discover unmet needs in rural settings in our partner programs in India and China. The program is multi-faceted: offering training; funding; workshops; travel and course credit via project work. It requires a self-starting student or fellow with a desire to make an impact on a global scale.

Partnering with our global fellows from India and Singapore, two teams (up to four students and/or fellows) per year will have the opportunity to research a disease state from the country of choice (either India or China), take the Global Biodesign class, then over the summer spend four - six weeks with the global fellows doing needs finding and needs validation in rural healthcare settings. Upon return, the teams will take Independent Study units to work on a concept that will meet the need found.Map

Eligibility

Any Stanford student or fellow may apply to the Global Biodesign Student Exchange Program, but graduate students and fellows will have preference. Prerequisites include taking a related course, such as the Biodesign Innovation class or the Extreme Affordability class [students without such a course may petition to be considered citing other experiences or show of interest.] You should have a desire to make an impact in underserved population centers and have an interest in medical technology.

You must be available to

  • take the Global Biodesign class
  • travel the summer after the class
  • take independent study units in the following fall quarter

* Global Needs

A global need is one that is derived from an underserved population in a developing country, often obviating the need for low-cost device solutions.
