BIOE 375: Biodesign Innovation Project
(MED 273, ME 369, OIT 582/4)
Graduate or postdoctoral students from the schools of business, engineering, humanities & science, law and medicine are invited to participate in the Elective Course, BioE 375A (Winter) and BioE 375B (Spring). This is a companion course to BioE 374A and 374A is required to be taken in conjunction with 375A. Undergraduates with exceptional background will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Note: Students who have completed the A quarter will be given preference for the B quarter.

The two-quarter Elective Course series provides hands-on training that exposes students to the practical aspects of technology invention and development. The class is a companion course to BIOE 374 - students work in small project teams in the Biodesign prototyping lab or bench space, collaborating with the fellows of the program.
375A
Interdisciplinary student teams select a medical need, characterize it fully, develop a needs statement, invent potential conceptual approaches to solving the need, and pursue initial prototyping and planning for regulatory and reimbursement pathways. Guest experts. Corequisite: BIOE 374A.
375B
IInterdisciplinary teams select the most promising invention from BIOE 375A and move into prototyping and project planning. Teams develop strategies for patenting, FDA submission, third-party reimbursement, licensing agreement or launching a start-up, including cash forecasting and business plan. Prerequisites: BIOE 374A, 375A. Corequisite: BIOE 374B.

Applying for the Course
You must apply to take the Biodesign Innovation course. The application is open for Spring, 2009. [You will be applying for Bioe 374, but must check the box that says you also want to take Bioe 375]
The Biodesign course application is required in addition to registering through Axess for the course.
Application deadline:
GSB Students: November 30; students are notified one week after the deadline whether they have been accepted into class.
All others: midnight of the first Thursday of the quarter. Students are notified by Friday of that week whether they have been accepted into class.
